Date is run by Hicham Kacimi, operating as MeetOnDate, in Porto, Portugal. Hicham Kacimi is the data controller for everything described here. For any privacy question or request, write to hello@meetondate.app. A real person reads it.
What you give us when building your profile: name, birthday, gender, height, photos, bio, what you are here for, interests, talking topics, how you act on a date, languages, lifestyle answers, and your Perfect Date ideas. Plus your email address when you sign up, and the messages, photos, videos and voice notes you send in chats. We also record which profiles you liked or passed, so the deck does not show you the same person twice. It also covers anything else you choose to add, such as your work and studies, where you are from, your love languages and the notes and places on your photos, and what you send to other people: likes, photo comments and profile tips.
Most of it because we cannot run the app without it: showing your profile to the people you asked to be shown to is the service you signed up for. Your gender together with who you asked to be shown is the one exception. That pair runs on your explicit permission and nothing else, and the next section explains exactly what it means. Location and notifications run on your permission, which you can withdraw at any time in your phone settings. Safety work (reports, blocks, bans and the limits that stop spam) runs on our legitimate interest in keeping people safe, and on our legal duty to act on illegal content. We never use your data for advertising, because there is none.
Your gender sitting next to who you asked to be shown says something about your sexual orientation. European law protects that more strictly than the rest of your profile and asks for your explicit permission before anyone handles it, so we say it plainly: choosing those two answers is you giving that permission. We use the pair for one thing: deciding whose deck you appear in and whose profiles you see. It is never sold, never used for advertising, never given to anyone outside the companies listed below that simply store the data for us, and it never appears as a label on your profile. You can change who you are shown at any time from the filters; your gender is fixed at signup because it is identity, and deleting your account removes both answers along with everything else.
Your gender cannot be changed in the app, because it decides whose deck you appear in. If it is wrong, write to hello@meetondate.app and we will correct it.
We use your approximate location to show people nearby and how far away they are. Other people only ever see a distance in kilometres, never your address or exact position. Travel mode uses a city you choose instead, and snaps back to your real location automatically after a week. The app works without location: you simply see no distances.
Cameras attach invisible information to photos, including the exact spot where the picture was taken. Every photo you upload is resized and re-encoded before it leaves your phone, which removes that. The month and year you enter for a photo are the only date information we keep, and you enter those yourself.
Some things in Date are only ever visible to you: who liked or commented on your photos, who liked your profile or gave you a tip, how many people viewed your profile and date plans, and your profile strength (which is calculated on your device and never stored anywhere). Profile tips are private in both directions: nobody but you can see the tips you receive, there are no scores, and the person who left one is always named to you. Hiding your age hides it from everyone.
Visitors is off unless you turn it on, and it works both ways: while it is on, you see who opened your profile in the last 30 days, and the people whose profiles you open can see that you did. Only visits made while the visitor had it on are ever shown. Turning it off takes your visits off everyone's list, and with incognito on your visits show only to people you have liked. The record of who opened which profile, which also produces the private view counts, is deleted after 90 days.
To stop profile tips and photo comments being used to hurt anyone: only verified people can give a tip, at most 10 a day; and each account can send at most 20 photo comments a day, 3 of them to the same person. To enforce these limits we record when each tip and photo comment is sent and to whom, and delete that record after 7 days. The app also checks on your phone whether a message, tip or comment contains insulting words, and asks you to think again before sending. That check happens on your phone and sends nothing anywhere.
With incognito on, you disappear from the deck for everyone except the people you have liked. It changes who can see your profile, not what we store. Your profile stays exactly as it was, and turning incognito off puts you back.
The verification selfie is used to check you match your profile photos, then deleted. It is never shown to anyone and never becomes part of your profile.
Chats are stored so we can deliver them and keep your history. View-once photos and videos are permanently deleted after the receiver opens them. Deleting your account removes your conversations. Because a conversation has two sides, it goes from the other person’s app too, which is how most dating apps work but is worth knowing before you delete.
If you turn on notifications, your phone gives us an address to send them to. It is used for nothing else, it is deleted when you sign out, and it is deleted automatically if the app has not opened on that phone for ninety days. You can turn each kind of notification off inside the app, and all of them off in your phone settings.
When you report someone we store the report to act on it. When you block someone we store the block so you stay invisible to each other. The blocked or reported person is never told who did it. Reports are the one thing that survives an account being deleted. Otherwise anyone reported for abuse could erase the record by leaving and signing up again. What survives is the report and the first names on it, not the deleted person’s profile, and it is deleted one year after it was made. No account is ever banned by a machine: automatic limits slow spam down, but a person decides every ban and every removal, tells you the reason, and can be asked to look again.
Your profile, photos and messages: until you delete your account, which removes them immediately and permanently. Notification addresses: until you sign out, or ninety days without opening the app. Safety reports: one year from the day the report was made, then deleted. They outlive the account they are about, for the reason given above, but not for ever. Crash reports: kept by Sentry for at most ninety days and contain no profile information.
Your data is stored with Supabase on servers in the European Union (Ireland) and protected with per-user access rules: the database itself refuses to hand your private data to anyone but you.
We do not sell your data. There is no advertising and no data brokers. The only third parties involved are the services that run the app itself: hosting and message delivery (Supabase, in the EU), crash reporting (Sentry, in the EU), notification delivery and app updates (Expo, in the United States), GIF search (GIPHY, in the United States, which only receives what you type into the GIF box), and signing in with Google or with Apple if you pick one of those instead of an email address (both in the United States, and both receive only what is needed to let you in). Payments will join this list if paid extras arrive. Each one handles only what its job needs. For the services in the United States, the transfer runs on the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses. Sign-up and password emails are sent by Resend, a United States company, from servers in the European Union, under the same clauses. Travel mode looks up towns that are not on its own list with Photon, a free map search run by komoot in Germany, which only receives what you type into the search box.
You can see and correct everything on your profile from the app, and permanently delete your account, with everything attached to it, from your Profile tab, or at meetondate.app/delete-account, at any time. You can also ask us for a copy of your data in a portable form, ask us to correct or delete something specific, ask us to pause our use of it while a correction or an objection is being settled, object to how we use it, or withdraw a permission you gave. Write to hello@meetondate.app and we will answer within a month. If you are in the EU and you think we have got it wrong, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In Portugal that is the CNPD, at cnpd.pt.
Date is for adults. We do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18, and an account we find to belong to someone underage is deleted along with everything on it.
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will tell you in the app first. Anything unclear, ask: hello@meetondate.app.
